Highbinder/Frawg--please forgive me if I'm putting words in your mouth that are other than what you intended (I've been wrong before (and will without a doubt be again)).
Yessir, that's what I had in mind!

Edit: the 30* angle is, of course, between the index finger and the (imaginary) hypotenuse.

If the angle "L" shaped pistol is 90°, then the tip of the index finger to the tip of the thumb must be 30°. I remember something about a triangle having 180° of angles, and if one is a right angle the remaining two will be 30° and 60°.

    Yeah, that's it Trooper.

To amplify my first response, the short leg (thumb) of the implicit right triangle (for my hand, at least) is about half the length of the (imaginary) hypotenuse. That means the angle opposite the thumb would be about 30 degrees. sin(30) = 0.5 and all that.

What I'll try is to form the 'pistol' and touch thumb & finger tips to the suspension line. If the finger ends up about horizontal, I'm good. I've just been eyeballing things, so it will be interesting to see how this works out.

I wish I had this much fun in math class. I might have done better than the 65% each year...

Oops... downside: how to measure the angle with your hand when you're in the hammock??? Hmmm....

That's a great idea. Mine seems pretty close to 30 (imaginary hypotenuse). I'm going to make a triangle and compare.

I'm at 80' with my left hand, but I can do about 110' with the right.

Interesting, but not terribly useful...better to learn what works for you, and what it looks like. That may, or may not, be 30* off of horizontal.
