Very very sad.

How awful. My thoughts are definitely with both families and loved ones.
What a tragedy! I wish it would turn out to be some sort of internet scam/BS!
I just got done posting in Papabears thread about how I always choose the smallest trees I can find that will do the job. And don't forget about large limbs falling on you from the top of the trees!
Of course, a widowmaker or large limb can fall on you in a tent, or just walking in the woods. But we do add the risk of stressing the trees.
Lord have mercy on these people!
It's very sad. Another lesson in making wise choices. Dead trees don't maintain a good root system. It's not wise to hang from them or near them.
I saw this story on here yesterday, then travelled to Fort Wayne (not knowing that's where the incident occurred) for work training. I woke up and saw it on the news this morning and thought, small world. The news said it was unclear how the accident happened and it is still under investigation, but I guess we know better since we have a second-hand account.
So sorry to hear of the loss and I will be thinking of the deceased and injured the next time I put my hammock up.
oldgringo's reply to my worrying about owning extra hammocks:
How many pairs of underwear do you own? Do you refer to them as "extras", simply because you're not wearing all of them as we speak?
Very sad indeed. Thoughts are with the families at this time....

I agree with you, from those photos it is apparent the tree was in bad shape. Thanks for posting the photos, sometimes lessons can be learned from one persons tragedy that might help others avoid the same fate and as insensitive as it may seem to evaluate something like this, it might be more of a tragedy to not learn from it and teach others.
