hammock cooking

Has anyone got any info cooking setup whilst hommocking?

I've heated water for hot drinks in the JetBoil while holding the stove in my hammock. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone else, but it worked for me.

Also easy to just put the stove on the ground beside you and reach out to cook. As long as you don't have a stove that flares up, or a woodburner that'll send embers onto your hammock, that works well.

The tensegrity stove stand was made so I could sit in my hammock and cook, although shown here I have gone to ground to be sociable.

I used it from the hammock most of the time, and was pleased that it didn't set my cuben tarp ablaze. (I checked the temperature at tarp level frquently the first couple of times.)

I do not cook in or near my hammock. The danger is too great. (Often, I hang in Grizzly and Black Bear country.)

For that matter, I do not cook in my campsite. Food, cooking utensils, stove, fuel, all stay in the cook-site, about 100 yards from my campsite.

Even if you are not in bear country, there are other creatures that will come to the smell of food: squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons, mice, __SKUNKS__ , coyotes, and wolves.

At the cook-site, all food and food-related items are stored at least ten feet above the ground and at least four feet from the tree-trunk.

I sit the stove on the ground at arms length from laying in the hammock, but aways be aware of heat rising to the low edge of the tarp as well as your hammock & under quilt.

I should have learned something after I ate in my tent one rainy night, then dosed off w/ the door open & a mouse bit my ear back in the tent days

But it sure is fun to eat in bed & flirt w/ disaster

I have been sorely tempted, nay lured, by a certain well known ginger haired HF member who in his many videos has celebrated "Breakfast from me hammock". However the whole don't eat where you sleep thing has kept me hesitant. I live in Black Bear territory and it's something tho think about. Plus having something chew on-in-threw my Clark Hammock would cause severe heart palpitations.

I can see cooking the evening meal away from the hammock would be a good idea in Bear/Wolf/Mtn Lion country. Just like hanging your food and not wearing the cloths you cooked/ate in to bed. (No wiping your knife on the pant leg then jumping in the sack)

I for one will take the risk and heat my water in the morning for that first cup of coffee from the hammock. It's my second most favorite thing about hanging.
IF a bear comes up I'll just have to deal with it, just like, if he walked up on me cooking breakfast away from the hammock.

In a storm I will eat dinner under the tarp....
Always breakfast from the hammock.... but usually I am up and moving after that.

I keep any and all open flames away very far away from my hammock/tarp. I am not even close to experience enough to start playing with fire around my gear. I know some experienced hikers make coffee and such from their hammock but they are way more seasoned them myself. Just be careful. You may have a hot meal under your tarp and in your hammock but the hot meal isent any good if you got no tarp and hammock to lay in after wards

I try to generally cook way from hammock , But as other have mentioned weather sometime puts a damper on things I then will have my alcohol stove going within arms reach of hammock as I sit there reclining. I pay extra attention when I have the tarp down in a steep peak for bad weather if in porch mode less concern . Just never leave unattended
