Instructors and events wanted for Fall MAHHA 2010 Saturday, October 16

Hey everyone! I've rented the pavilion for the MAHHA, Saturday, Oct. 16 for all day use. Dutch has promised breakfast in the morning and then we have the potluck dinner and raffle at 5-ish pm since it will be getting dark earlier. So we have all that "tween" time for activities at the great big pavilion by the parking lot. People really like the DIY mini gear workshops that 2Q, Dutch, and others have done in the past but it works best when we post a specific time for each one so people know when and where activities will be taking place. So . . . .

    1. Looking for volunteers again this fall for more of the same, more of the different. Things that come to mind. 2Q's pot cones (don't say Caldera), whoopie slings, wood stoves, fancy feast stove, any kind of stove! Even quick and easy hammocks could be a workshop. Use this thread to volunteer yourself and post how long you will need to teach people your skills and we'll setup a schedule of events.

    2. Maybe you don't want to teach, but you have something really cool to show people. Dutch's gearskin pack, bridge hammocks, Dixon roller pack, Aarn packs, and those tensegrity stands for multiple hammocks come to mind quickly. Post it here.

    3. If anyone wants to lead a group into Harpers Ferry and explore the town and visit the ATC headquarters on Saturday, that's another event.

    4. There are other interesting places to visit as well. Post anything that you might be interested in leading and we'll work it into the schedule.

    5. Doing an "Open House" on Saturday where peopel visit each others hammocks to see the latest, the greatest, the most innovative is also something that can be scheduled if people want it.

    6. We could even do a contest. Lightest hammock setups come to mind -- like Sgt. Rock posted on. Send me your hammock setup description and listed weught and we could pick lightest three to show off at the campsite above the shelter. No prize, just bragging rights. People are always interested in seeing the lightest setups. What's the material used, what are the knots, pullouts etc. Is there any interest in this?

Throw out any ideas, requests, etc here and let's see what happens.

    HC

PS: Just an FYI for Instructors: there is no electric at the pavilion.

For anyone wanting to lighten their load, we could have
a panel of lightweight enthusiasts do a shake-down of
your weekend or long-distance pack & contents.

Is excellent idea. Make big trouble for moose and squirrel. I'll volunteer to do pack shakedowns if no one else wants to do it.

I have lots of half done/almost forgotten about projects I can show off. I think WV's stand will be the major attraction this year.

What’s happening at the Fall MAHHA

So far this is how things are shaping up. If you want to add anything, just post it and I'll add it. This gives newbies an idea of how things work.

What’s happening at the Fall MAHHA
Anything and everything subject to change or cancellation for any reason -- don’t get attached.

Friday Afternoon - Set up your hanging spot on the hill above the Crampton Gap AT shelter -- ½ mile in from parking lot following old forest road. Look for ribbon tied to tree for right path. Meet and greet other campers

Friday Dinner – on your own

Friday Dark-Thirty – campfires at hang site. Our camping area is a half mile in. Close enough for several people to hike in wood. No out-of-state wood. Only Maryland wood. Bring your camp chairs, your stories, camp songs. Huddle up around the fire with the only other people in the world who understand your addiction.

Saturday Dutch's World's Greatest Hiker Breakfast - Dutch & helpers

Saturday After Breakfast – Open House Tours at Campsite

Saturday Lunch – on your own. Dutch & bunch go out to lunch.

Saturday Afternoon Stuff at Pavilion – Times to be determined

    What’s gong on? . . . . . . . Hanger in Charge (call me “HIC”)
Pack Shake Down. . . . . . . . . Oh-No, Hooch, greenlespaul - Bring your packed pack and experts will tell you what to keep and what to ditch.
Stove Show & Tell . . . . . . . .“HIC” needed. Bring any stove that you're especially proud of to show all the newbies. Can be DIY or purchased.
Stove Cookoff! . . . . . . . . . . “HIC” needed. It's a race to a boil. Bring any stove/pot setup you want (including lids and windscreens). We'll time different stove categories to see who boils 2 cups of water the fastest.
Make Some Huaraches. . . . . . Pedro (Private message Pedro that you wanna make 'em so he can bring enough supplies.)

    Hangers showing off cool stuff
Dutch showing off “to be determined”
Mac & WV showing off tensegrity hammock stands (Jay contributing hammocks)
Looking for anyone that wants to bring Dixon Roller Pack or any Aarn Packs.

    Saturday 5-ish pm
Potluck Dinner & Raffle – Cost: $10. Additional raffle tickets cost extra. Hamburgers, Hotdogs, Plates, Plasticware, Napkins supplied. Hangers bring drinks, side dishes and desserts. We’ll post a food poll on the Campout Forum. Bring your flashlight for the walk back to campsite in dark and extra clothing because it cools down fast at dinner.

Saturday Dark-Thirty – campfires . Camping area close enough to hike in wood. No out-of-state wood. Bring only Maryland wood.

Sunday Morning – Breakfast on your own. Break camp as early or late as you want.

Guess I won't be able to show off my new electric 'tensegrity-cuben-whoopie-dory-shaped-cone-bridge-orca-stovebuddy-nest-biners' -- nowhere to plug them in. What a shame!

Seriously though, sounds like a great plan HC.
