I bought some 100 lb. braided fishing line on ebay for $ .01 + $5 shipping (sound familiar?). If I ever become a gram weenie, I'll use it for tarp tieouts, but as Old Gringo says, you need a really good system for storing it. The line can be spliced, but it's not as easy as splicing good spectra kite line or Jerry Brown dyneema fishing line. I have devised a line storage system that I think would work, though. My tieouts use Penberthy knots to attach to the tarp, and I wind them with the figure-8 on the fingers method. The thing that makes it work is attaching a 3/32" bungee nacrabiner to the end of the line and using it instead of a half hitch to fasten the figure-8 loops into a bundle. The stretch of the bungee keeps it tight even if you pull a bunch of loops out to extend the line. Adjusting a tiny penberthy may prove difficult, but I'll experiment with different types of line and different knots to see what works best - triple prussic or klemheist knot or some form of UCR perhaps.

I don't know the diameter of the spyder wire in question, but it may be too small for the knot bone to be used. I have made up some tarp tensioners utilizing the knot bone, and I too wondered if the knot bones would be viable with spyder wire to reduce weight. I don't know if the line diameter being too small would negate someone from using them instead of using knots specifically designed for super lines. Just my 2 cents.

But I would be interested in knowing if it would work with or without knot bones, and if the tangle factor could be overcome. It sure would be strong enough, and would weight next to nothing.

If you have ever spliced lash-it...I can't imagine that you would want to even try splicing spyder wire.

Cortland makes a splicing tool for hollow braid fishing lines that looks like a miniature loop turner (Dritz #647).
