    Planning an underquilt

    I'm starting to plan for making my own underquilt and have a few questions to get sorted out...

    My design is stemming from Mac's thread on PE underquilts and so I'm thinking that a layer or two of this stuff sandwiched between nylon should be adequate for three season hanging. I'm thinking of copying the design that lonetracker shows off here.

    My first question is would I see any benefit in using fleece instead of the nylon on the side that contacts the hammock?

    Second, is it too much overkill to use 1.9 oz ripstop nylon? I can source that locally and wouldn't have to order it.

    Thanks for the help!

    I say go for the 1.9 oz ripstop, if you want it. No one but you will know the difference, and you can save the shipping money.

    @tiger1dd - that sounds like a plan.

    Anyone have an opinion about using fleece in an underquilt?

    I use a NeatSheet in the summer. Not so much as an UQ. I just lay on it or ifI feel like messing with it, I'll put it between the layers on my DL hammock. It provides a little insulation and keeps a breeze from making me cold. I have also used a fleece sleeping bag and just laid on it.

    Fleece is a bulky alternative.

    +1

    Fleece + PEF is like re-bar stakes on a Cuben tarp.

    Ok, that is a bit exaggerated...

    John, you may also want to consider a Poncho Liner as an alternative. I have been researching them a good bit, and hope to make one as soon as I get a little more mula ($$$).

    Heres a link to a great illustration by dejoha: http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...d.php?t=18539&

    Good luck, and remember to update us on your progress!
