Speaking as an inexperienced seamster I'd say there are many bargains to be found among the old all-metal machines, even considering a trip in for service if needed. Wirerat got his for $20, mine was $40 and they'll still be making gear years from now.

Wow, you guys make me feel like I overspent on my Singer 403. But she's working well (better than my skill level).
I really like those Necchi. If I find one locally for cheap, I'll see if I can pick it up. People around here seem to think everything they own is made of gold though...so I have a feeling the pricing variances I'm seeing could be regional.
As I said up earlier... Did you over pay for the Singer? I don't think so but what do I know. Did you pay more than some machines are costing... Yes. Don't beat yourself up. The Necci was a good machine in its day. But remember you got a whole kit of accessories and a table. Some of those cams you may never use. But if you keep them in good order and complete it will add to the collector's value if you decide to sell it down the road. There are Singer collectors out there. I don't know about Necci collectors, but nothing would surprise me.

Everything I have read about the older Italian made Necchi machines, they are bullet proof, sew as good of a stitch as anything, and are easily self serviced.
Plus it's only a two stitch machine, simple to handle. I've already got as good of a grasp on this machine as I do my moms viking. Necchi machines tend to range between $20 to $75 for most models. There are a couple of highly prized models out there though.
