Does both is a bear. Check out the tutorial for the Dual-mode bridge hammock by griz. It is easier to make than it looks, but after having made one and tried it out... I wouldn't do it again. Not particularly successful at either IMO.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Solobear I understand your question because I too have never tried the bridge hammock and wonder about the lay, seems like it would have some shoulder squeeze because of the U but then the same reasoning could apply to a gathered end and I have none in the five I own.
Like the guys say if you live near one of these showings try them out,
I wish I lived in an area where I could check out all this gear these guys

    still at square 1

Thanks to all that replied. I guess I'll start with one (a simple gathered end) and work out from there...still at square one, but I've gotta start somewhere....so somewhere is the local fabric place for some ripstop and some webbing. Boo-Raw! The adventure continues.

Be sure to check out the instructions "stickied" in the DIY section of the forum.

Gathered end is much simpler than bridge, so it's a good place to start.
