Dear Diary,
Today, we got the first good rain we have had here in southern PA for a good little while. So, i decide I would take out my little gear and give it a test run after work. It was a butt-numbing 30 minute ride out to Caledonia State Park, and a grueling 50 yard hike to a decent set of trees! But I learned some very important things too. Like...
That water proof jacket? Totally not water proof. The tag lied.
Even full of water my hiking shoes don't slosh around too much. Thats' a pleasant surprise.
Getting my HH+stock tarp thrown up in under a couple minutes was great. Yanked off the skins...not a drop of water on the hammock. Tied everything out. Tarp did an amazing job of keeping that thing dry! Of course I then realized that *I* was the one who was soaking wet...and that tarp offered absolutely no where to get dry before climbing in if I were actually camping. Dang it. MacCat Deluxe here I come!
I did get set up right next to the little creek near the picnic area which had turned in to quite a nice stream with the rain. Once everything was set up it really was a gorgeous hang. So I am self-taught lesson 2. I am stupid for leaving my camera in the car, rather than just bringing along my dry bag. Yes diary, I will write this on the board until I remember it.
Really the little hang was a success. Learned a lot, and had a great place to start from thanks to all the great advice and people on this forum. Your insight and experience is invaluable to us noobs
