A few questions about hanging.

I have a few questions about DIY. I posted it under general hammock talk, but thought here might be better.
1. Was thinking about a DIY UQ. Was thinking about using a mummy sleeping bag (long) and cut a hole in the foot for the hammock, peapod style. Was thinking about this, before I found this site and saw a few who tried.
2. Any idea how warm it would be using a -15 bag?
3. Would I need to add something under the bag to help hold it up/protect it. Was thinking that if I made a tarp with silnylon, I could order extra for this. Just hem the seams add shock cord to pull tight.
4. When using a DIY tarp, do you run the seam length wise (with the hammock)? or across the hammock. Speer has an excellent article and pics on how to sew the seam.

I assume you mean a hole in the foot of the bag, sr1355 successfully made one out of a Mummy bag and apparently it is warm. I believe the bag had a zipper in the foot box. Here you go! http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...leeping&page=2 If you do it let us know and post a pic or two. Good Luck!

I think most people run the seam along the ridgeline. I'm not sure why, but if everyone does it that way, it's probably for a good reason

I assume that the seam would run the length. If made like the one that Speers has, it seems to me that it would be stronger, with the way that it is folded over. Thanks for your input.

Speer's instructions for a rectangle 8x10 show the seam perpendicular to the ridgeline. (I made one from his book's instructions...)

The seam he shows is, I think, a flat-felled seam.

Many people believe that the tarp is stronger with the ridge line running parallel to that hammock. This is likely b/c of the use of the double ridge line - since the tarp forms part of the ridge line it is stronger when the main force not pulling across the seam. If you use a single ridge line setup much of this force would be transferred to the line and so the direction it is sewn would not be as important.

That said, I have a tarp sewn perpendicular to the hammock and have had no problems with it.
