    Cuben Fiber Tarp Tape... Help

Looking to reinforce some attachment points on my Cuben fiber tarp.

The recommendation from Joe at Zpacks was to use duct tape but I want a clear tape which is strong and doesnt add much weight.

What do you use? and where can I get it?

Online stores are a plus as Lowes and Home Depot here on LI blow chunks and local hardware stores are basically a thing of the past here.

    Raul,
My first choice would be making some tape or reinforcement patches myself using cuben fiber and one of several different adhesives: 3M adhesive transfer tape 9460, Aquaseal, or Loctite Hysol. The adhesives are all polyurethane, and all are very strong. With the 9460, I'd use 3M Primer 94 as well. The problem is that these products are hard to find and expensive. Of the three adhesives, you're most likely to find Aquaseal available and affordable. It's sold for repairing neoprene wetsuits and waders, but there are other formulations for repairing shoes which might work, too. Try a dive shop or look online. A Google search yields a number of sources.

The other component, of course is the cuben fiber - also hard to find in small quantities and also expensive. I'm currently working with CT1K.08, which is good for tarps (though commercial suppliers favor the heavier CT2K.08). I think it's not strong enough for tape, though, so when I make tieouts or do repairs I use double or triple layers. A heavier grade of cuben would be a better choice.

If you can't find scraps of heavier cuben, I can send you some CT1K.08 to use. Counselor may have some; you could PM him and ask. Good luck! If you can, document your repairs and post an evaluation.

    Thanks for the info WV

I got a PM from Pisanodc regarding Mike St Pierre over at www.hyperlitemountaingear.com

I contacted Mike and he has a adhesive tape made with Cuben fiber blended in. Ordered some from him I'll let you guys know how it works out. I got enough to reinforce the ridgeline and the attachment points plus extra for future repairs. Hopefully it wont add too much to the weight.

That's good news. If there is a manufacturer's name or product number on the tape, can you let us know? I like the looks of the HYperlitemountaingear web site. They have a nice explanation of what cuben fiber is, and their rationale for different bonding methods, while not very specific, still makes good sense.
