Hey, so i made my first diy hammock out of 1.9 oz ripstop, but it was a little more weighty than i would like so i was wondering if 1.1 ripstop is strong enough to make a single layer gathered end hammock with the hammock knot in each end instead of a tube stitch. Im 5' 9" and 175pounds. any thoughts??

It should be fine to 190 or so. It won't lay quite as flat as 1.7 or 1.9, but it will hold.

I'm 185 and have a slept quite a few nights in my DIY gathered end made from 1.1oz ripstop. It is kind of freaky though. Just seems like it shouldn't work.

Just as a test, I decided to make a hammock with an 11' body, just to see how it would compare to my 9' DIY... It's made from 1.1 ripstop 2nd's I bought from Sclittlefield.
I now use it as my primary hammock, and have slept 7+ nights and several naps in it.
I weigh 210lbs... + clothingI keep inspecting the whipping to make sure it isn't failing...
If I had to do it over again (and I might) I'd probably go double Layer...

I made my first two hammocks from 1.1 material. Both work, both often look like they might fall aopart at any time. I then made a hammock from 1.9 and found that it is more comfortable due to the much lower stretch factor.
Like many things in camping, it is a trade off between comfort/durability and weight.
I've made two from 1.1 oz ripstop. Some ripstop is more stretchy than others and that will definitely make a difference in comfort. My 1.1 sil hammock is pretty comfortable and shows no signs of damage after several nights in it...probably 8-10. I'm ~180 lbs.

IMPOSSIBLE JUST TAKES LONGER
Since nobody brought this up i thought i should throw my 2 cents in.
I made my first and 2nd hammock out of 1.9oz ripstop. Mostly since it was easy and cheaper to get but i did have some method to my madness.
I used the table at the bottom of the link below to figure out which material i should use. I weight around 250lbs so i figured that if 1.7 was flat at 190 the 1.9 should be flat around 210ish and so far i have slept like a baby in it.

There are some other links which say the recommended weights for ripstop hammocks but the one above i thought was the most informative and simple.
hey guys, thanks for the input. i have decided to go with 1.5 oz ripstop because it seems to be a perfect compromise between 1.1 and 1.9, and besides- now i wont have to work too much about it comming down in the night!!
