    Cuben Fiber Tape... UPDATE

Update on my cuben fiber tape search. Contacted Mike St Pierre over at http://www.hyperlitemountaingear.com/ regarding tape for a cuben tarp. Turns out he had a homegrown tape with cuben fiber weaved into it.

Grabbed me about 20 feet at $2.50 per foot to reinforce the ridgeline seam and the tie out seams and a some extra for any future repairs. Total weight added was 0.70 ounces therefore my total tarp set up went from 6.4 to 7.1 ounces. I'm not too upset with the added weight since I snagged me a summer quilt hopefully to arrive any day now which saved me 5 ounces in the summer.

Tape looks really well put together, matches the white cuben fiber just fine, strong, and sticks to the cuben nicely. Here are some pictures:

Im considering doing the same with my Zpacks tarp which Im awaiting for anxiously

The tape looks fairly wide, how many inches across is it?

Also, did you apply the tape to the inside of the tarp or the outside?

Wow, that tape looks like it could hold up a truck!

Raul, are you maybe obsessing about the grams a bit much? Are you enjoying the chase/challenge and that's what's driving you, or are these shaved grams going to make a big difference at this point? (I'm asking in all seriousness - as someone who has chased many dragons)

I'm not even a backpacker, and I love this stuff...all boats float yada, yada, yada.... Ditto Sgt. Pepper's lightweight rig. These guys move the whole forward with them as they go.

It is a wee bit over an inch across.

For the attachment point areas I did both front and back because that is where the stress is going to be.

For the ridgeline itself I did just the top as Pisanodc put 3M mylar tape underneath it. However I would think just putting it on the top would be sufficient to waterproof it.

The tape is actually quite thin the pic I took was with the tape still attached to the backing.

Obsessing... maybe a little. Obsessing and ounce counting (I havent switched over to grams) got my base weight down to less than 9.5lbs for the summer. However, this is done without sacrificing my current comfort level as well.
