So with all the great input from all of you it defiantly makes more sense to me now. It is really for not much more then personal preference that most of you hang your tarps high off of the ground so you can see out at all of the many spenders in the woods. Guess that is why most all of us are out there to start with so we can get away and enjoy the outdoors. The light bulb is now on. Thanks to everyone for the input. Regards, Dale

P.S. Those are some great pictures and very cool set ups that you all posted. Thanks

The stove is from Titaniumgoat.com and u can get the fiberglass cloth from him also. If u buy the stove, he gives u enough fiberglass cloth to do the job.

Look at Darby's post (#20) the 3rd pic for why I hang just a bit off the ground in winter, especially if it's snowing or going to snow. Otherwise the snow will push in on your tarp & CRUSH YOU TO DEATH ! Actually the tarp will just push in on you, I'm pretty sure you wont get crushed.... pretty sure. A snow shovel is a handy tool when it snows on camping trips. The 2 at Mt Rogers this year got a real workout.
Sat when Darby's pics were taken, my tarp had stopped collapsing down on me because my hammock ridge line stopped it, but I could barely get out of the hammock. Thursday when I got there, I had the tarp nearly to the ground & could stand almost upright (I'm 5' 7"). Sat, my tarp ridgeline was 4' off the ground.

But in answer to the OPs question; I usually rig, depending on weather, 1' to 4' gap under my tarp. In cold weather the 1' gap isn't as noticeable as you would think temp wise, but the condensation is MUCH less. I took the tarp edges to the ground at Mt rogers just because, no real reason, I just did.
Inside my tarp, one end closed, the other open all weekend: the temp was almost 20 degrees warmer than outside the tarp. I had not been inside the tarp for at least 4 hrs. YMMV!
When you have a backpack on, no matter where you are, you’re home.
PAIN is INEVITABLE. MISERY is OPTIONAL.
