MLD UL Hammock Tarp ... any experience?

I have a large tarp which works quite nicely in bad weather, but I no longer want to pack it when the weather is supposed to be good. So, for a "just in case" tarp, I looked at making an asymetrical diamond a bit larger than the Hennesey version. Since my big tarp is Spinnaker, I wanted to go with either Spinn or cuben for this one to realize a real weight advantage. After studying bonding techniques and sewing problems, as well as the price of cuben, I decided to stick with Spinn.

However, thru-hiker is out of Spinn right now, so I cruised over to MountainLaurelDesigns.com to see if Ron would sell some of his Spinn (which is the same as the one thru-hike sells). Well, I realized that Ron sells the same tarp I was going to make AND sells the finished tarp cheaper than I can buy just the Spinnaker fabric, let alone the other do-dads needed. I know that Ron does fabulous work.

So, here is my question. Does anyone have any experience with this tarp when used on a Warbonnet Blackbird?

No experience with the WBBB. but I will say it barely covers my Nano7, if that helps at all...

Yes, that does help. With the WBBB's footbox and extended shelf, I need to be very cautious.

I'd not want to be out in anything more than a sprinkle in that case.

I think Quoddy also has experience with this tarp and likes it. PM him.

I see this is an old thread, i just purchased one of these tarps for a light weight option for either my fiance's HH or my 10 ft dangerbird. i tried it out last night and my DB fit under pretty good but of course it didnt rain. i just wanted to see if anyone else has some more experience in questionable weather with this tarp. thanks for any input.

    MLD UL tarp

I have three tarps and the MLD UL is one of them. I first pitched it over my Warbonnet Traveler. I did not have any trouble staying dry. You have to pitch it close to perfection. I have been through many extremely hard rains without getting wet. I have not been through any wind driven rain storms. With the Traveler you can attach part of your hammock to the ridgeline and get a little extra protection. I now mostly use my Superfly with the Traveler. I use the MLD UL with my Eno single nest. And I pitch the hammock as high as I can into the tarp. I am trying to develop a light system for fast and long hikes and cycling trip. The MLD UL tarp is where I am now. I wish it was a little bigger; you could double the size and it would only be six ounces. I sense that I may come to the position that the Traveler and the Superfly are so comfortable that the added weight is a small problem.
