Just an update. I called the Bankhead Wilderness' informational number and they confirmed that the fire ban is indeed still on through December 31, 2010. What a total bummer.

Brushy Creek camp is drive in and has approved fire rings. It's a nice place and is still close to most trail heads. It's an option if you really want a fire.

Thanks Hetairoi; appreciate the heads up on that. I'll get with my buddies and see what they want to do. I think I'll be ok without a fire to be honest (though it sure does help with warmth, etc), but I think they will be most bummed about it.

On Alatrails.com folks are saying that people are building fires anyway in Sipsey? I drove from Moulton to Double Springs a few weeks ago and notice smoke from fires everywhere in yards? I also read where 2 folks in Sipsey got tickets? I dont know if this will help or not but you can put a can of Sterno in your backpack to warm my hands if needed or just something to look at while you enjoy your fellowship of camping and being outdoors!
