a new low in the hammock

    Low temperature, that is.
Just got into hammock camping this year and haven't been able to afford UQs for both my hammock and my son's, so we just use CCF pads.
His is a 1/2" CCF pad and mine is a thin (5mm I think) pad I cut from foam I bought on eBay.
Decided to try it again last night and the temps dropped to the mid-40s, but we were both still warm & comfy. (I use a sleeping bag rated to 30°F and gave my son my 0°F bag)
I'm thinking we could probably still be good with the CCF pads down into the upper 30s?

Thinking of trying my fleece TQ and insulated coveralls next trip????

That is good information. I have not purchased an UQ yet. I will be trying a pad hopefully this weekend. I have a feeling it will get me lower than I expect.

Pads are a pain, but a half inch is almost impervious to the cold.

If you can handle carrying a roll of 4 or 5 mats, you will be fine into much lower temps.

The drawback is a roll of mats the size of tree trunk, but they will generally weigh less than a winter UQ.

Like the campsite setup in the picture. What are you guys using to hang your packs up?

I was surprised that the thin 5mm pad does so well. I sleep in a DD Frontline and the double bottom keep the pad in place. I simply place it between the layers for my diagonal lay and it stays in place all night with no shifting around. Not sure a thicker pad would do as well.

Hopefully I'll be able to afford UQs in the near future. This hammock camping could easily turn into a year-round adventure.

It was a tough decision on whether to get out & deer hunt as planned or stay in the warm sleeping bag and snooze a bit longer this morning.

    We didn't hunt this morning.

    That is a wonderful picture......
I used to get down to 0º with two pads ..... very doable.
An SPE makes them way more manageable. They don't sell them anymore but they are an easy project......
