First DIY Hammock

Hello all,

I'm in New Zealand and the materials needed are quite hard to come by, I was wondering if some kind of Oxford cloth or ripstop cotton canvas would work, if anyone has any experience with these materials?

you want to use a synthetic fabric that can withstand the outdoors.

I am using ripstop cotton...not canvas...and not much experience/mileage...but it works

If you can't find ripstop nylon or nylon taffeta, 100% polyester fabrics would be my next choice. Cotton doesn't dry, and will rot if left damp. Polyester is much stronger than cotton, too, and won't stretch or shrink.

I've made hammocks out of heavy weight Polyesters, but others have made successful hammocks from lighter weight polyester material... your success will have a lot to do with the weight the hammock will carry, and how much abuse it will take.
