Replacing the suspension

Hi guys,

I'm giving my Clark Ultralite an upgrade. I have 30' of mule tape on the way for a possible DIY hammock, but I want to try this out.

Thread the mule tape through the channel at the end of the hammock and tie it off somehow. On the other end of the tape, tie another loop and clip in a carabiner.

To set it up, I would wrap the mule tape around a tree twice and come back to the line going to the hammock. Tie a marlin-spike hitch, and instead of using a toggle, clip in the carabiner and tighten it up.

What do you guys think? Will it work?

Sounds like it could work. I have really liked using tree straps with whoopies slings on my clark... Makes it really easy to make the fine adjustments necessary for a good hang.

I changed mine immediately to webbing - never hung from the stock ropes.

I used the stock suspension twice, and never again.

It ends up working just like a marlin-spike hitch suspension, except weight is on the toggle because the toggle is the carabiner.

I like it a lot. There's still a bit of fiddle factor, but it works well for a very light setup.

I used my stock ropes for a year. I just recently switched one of my Clarks over to the Woopie AIOS. I will use it for a while befroe possibly switching the others. So far I like the Woopies.

For crikeys sake. Take a break for a couple months and somebody has to slip in a new acronym. What the heck is an AIOS? Any others invented in my absence that I need to figure out?

I went to straps and Dutch clips with my new NX-250, much easier to hang this way.

Mule tape is slick. Really slick. It's lubricated so it pulls through conduit easily. I've read it can be washed to remove the lubricant.

It does not hold knots well. There is good info on the Neptco site on the preferred knotting methods. Their illustrations are for joing end to end, but you could adapt it for a loop.
