Top quilt advice for a Big Guy

    This thread:

    http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=23251

got me thinking about potential TQ drafts. Unlike that poster I am using an UQ (3S-3/4 Crowsnest) and as a temporary TQ I have an old Marmot Grouse semi-rectangular bag. I estimate that the bag's circumference is about 60" - quite a bit more than the typical 48" of a Hammock Gear or JRB TQ. Of course, I have a 54" chest.

One thing I noticed over my recent 5-night trip was that when I rolled to my opposite side I often pinched a section of bag & zipper, resulting in a gap. Easily corrected, and not a deal killer.

What I want to know from you folks already using dedicated TQs is: Does the narrower width of the HG or JRB quilts result in MORE gapping or is the narrow width beneficial in not offering so much material to trap during a rollover?

And do you think that the zipper on the Grouse is causing additional pinching when I roll?

As a bigger fellow (58 jacket) I have used an Arrowhead New River UQ as a top quilt and have had no issues with gaps. I cinch down one end of the TQ then lace some shockcord through the grosgrain loops (3 set) of the TQ to make a closed area and then drape the rest over my shoulders/under my neck. With the New River UQ on the outside I have been comfortable in the mid 20's with a light baselayer.

    I hope this helps!!!!!!!!!!

    Thanks!

Personal experiences are what I am looking for. Up to this point I was just hypothesizing.

We offer custom " going to ground" TQ that can be made extra wide (however wide you want). and straps around the back for extra fit. We also put a snap at the head end with a cinch for optional tucking. You are welcome to PM me for more details on customizing to your size.
