Poormans Nacrabiner? well maybe not poor..... Kalibiner??

I dont know if this is already out there or anything but i was playing around tonight with some recently discarded grandtrunk suspension/ultimate truck bed tiedown rope and realized that you dont necessarily need amsteel to make a nacrabiner/soft shackle style suspension connector. not everyone has access to those resources at all times and well, this is really easy to do. its almost as easy as the nacrabiner- Id say about 10% more fiddle factor. So here goes:

started with about 22" of grand trunk's finest

tie an overhand knot right in the middle. leave it nice and loose, we're talking a perfect circle here.

bring the legs alongside each other

make another over hand knot with the legs. crank this one down hard

feed leg knot through middle overhand loop

tighten the loop down behind knot.

i crank on it with the butterfly-stretch armstong technique; open it up like a butterfly, grasp the loops with your fingers or two screwdrivers if you dont have the metal, like myself, and really give it some grunt

    all set up

    hangin from it now

as it type this, this makeshift nacrabiner from normally tossed rope is suspending me for the night. i have not tested this before

better believe my fingers are crossed

We will see what the night holds for this test. For scientific reference im weighing in at 220lbs. test night 1 underway

Great idea. If nothing else it should work for light support like tarps and such.

Seems there was somthing like this in one of the threads about nacrabeiners. I think the idea is you make a continuous loop with a big knot (think I used my fav. Zepplin bend) then opposite the knot you just do a clove hitch and stick the knot through, and tighten the clove hitch around it.. I'm pretty sure thats how I did it at the time.
    Good luck,

BananaHammock did something similar with 550 paracord. Made a loop with a lanyard knot and then lark's headed the loop to the lanyard knot. Seems like that would be easier to undo over this configuration, unless I'm missing something. Might have to try it and see.

    He called it the Parabiner:

I like your "kalibiner". The overhand knot in the middle, makes a regular overhand knot at the end secure-cool. The last photo in wide-angle, has excellent artistic merit. Well done, friend.

I am glad that you had your fingers crosses, as there are several potential failure points in your suspension on either side of the kalibiner. It reminds me of when I was in highscool. I suspended my box springs and mattress from the cieling with eye hooks and clothes line. I enclosed the space with a hippie tapestry. It worked fine...until it fell down. Nobody was hurt

ya i hear ya dblhmmck, not the safest route but its worked fine so far.

Ive been sleeping with these eye bolts for about two weeks now with not so much as a creak the entire time. this is also a regular lounge spot in my room so i trust it. makes a decent standard sized hammock test rig too.

all that said- you might have noticed the padding on the floor. Im in the last few weeks of broken heel recovery and im not trying to start back from beginning. crutches are lame!

You might want to look into trying a better stopper knot, like a diamond knot.

The overhand knot in the middle seems like it would be to hard to open depending on the type of cord your using. I've made and used these with just making a loop and then larks head it behind the stopper knot. They are easy to get open.

    Good stuff!

Just to needle you a tiny bit... your poor man's soft shackle is the weak link in that suspension!

never thought of a larkshead but that makes perfect sense.

i didnt use a diamond knot because, well, i just cant figure them out. The cord used is whatever comes on the GT UL not the best in the world but apparently rated to somewhere around 1000lbs. One thing that was nice about that cord is its three strand core thats was relatively stiff. this made freeing the overhand knot in the middle a breeze this morning.

Trust me guys, i wouldn't generally hang from this sort of rig and im by no way suggested that you should. i was doing so solely to test this idea and it worked pretty well. Not my every day but if i needed to i would trust it.
