I think this is going to be my next project...well not next...but right after my next. I've gotta make my step daughter a hammock for her birthday in 2 1/2 weeks. I've got the material ordered for 3 or 4 hammocks. I was just going to stick to a simple gathered end...until I started reading this.
I like the idea of the simple gathered end with the stretch sides for the kids. They can get in either side and when camping outside of bug season they can just leave the bug net off (Fronkey inspired style). But for myself I really like the idea of the "warbird". Once the fabric arrives I will "try" to take pics of my progress.

Do I read this that the edge of the hammock is stitched to the edge of the triangle?
The upper edge of the hammock body (as drawn) is attached to the upper edge of the triangle and then, edge to edge stitched together following the edge of the triangle around the vertex?

No. It keeps your feet off the bug net. It does sorta force you to lay one way, as it tightens up that side. Before I netted my hammock I had a footbox just to keep my top quilt and feet in the hammock... knotty's stretch-side hammock does the same thing...

I just finished mine.(DIY DOuble layer with foot box and zipped in bug net) I made it a little longer (135" for the material length). I skipped sewing on the 8" piece on the zipper side (as my material was about 6" wider than needed) and I reduced the size on the opposite side. It worked really good and seems really comfortable (i havent got a chance to spend the night in it yet). It does appear that I cold have left out everything on the opposite side except for the footbox as that side sits quite high when I am in the hammock. I may look at removing it and just leaving the foot box but that would mean removing the zipper I have sewn on the back side. That may be more work than I want to get into so I may just have to make a whole new one

I'm in the middle building one of these using some of the group buy ACU material. I'm using the plans HERE and I have a couple of questions. What type of material is everyone using for the small reinforcement patch? How is it being attached to the shelf / footbox piece. Should I roll hem the shelf / footbox piece before attaching it to the main body?
No need to roll hem the shelf/footbox area. As far as material there are different options. I have used just another layer of body material, or a heavier nylon like a 2.8 oz plain weave, or some ballistic style nylon if you want to really go strong. Didn't really notice a difference with any of them...
