    down jacket to UQ

I was thinking of different ways to get an underquilt....and the idea came to me that what if you could use a down coat as an underquilt as well....really like the idea of multifunction...just wondering if anyone thought of this or had any ideas....

I also found this good deal:

There are some photos in the gallery of someone taking a down jacket and stringing it up under the hammock.

In my inexperienced opinion, I have a feeling it would work, but would have cold spots. Especially compared to a proper UnderQuilt that's shaped to match the hammack, and hold tight without compressing the down.

I had some experience with this at the end of summer trying to hang a down vest. It is very difficult and troublesome to try and hang it in just the right spot. Even if the jacket were large it'd still would have cold spots too. If your looking for multifunction you may want to give a look a jacksrbetter. They have a few UQ that can be worn as a parka/vest.

I know a few ppl have tried this and i dont think any of them had any luck with it
    from what i remember

it would be a cool idea i know the jacks had a 2/3 length UQ that turned into a vest...if i remember they only sold a few it was a limited time offer
i really wish i would have gotten one

i might try to make something along the lines of the JRB vest this winter
i think it would be a cool idea for a 3 season UQ/down vest ...add some JRB sleeves and a hood and BAM...you got a sweet setup
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

I've done this with a down jacket, works fine.
The vest will pose issues because of the arm holes.

Pull the sleeves inside. Sleeves will add loft to the center. Turn the coat so the collar is pointed towards your feet (your shoulders will fit better in the waist of the coat)

    Gargoyle,

Do you think that the length will be long enough? ideally, a 2/3 UQ should go from shoulders to waist or longer to about the knees?

It won't be a good uq as far as coverage, just due to the length.
Mine runs from my shoulders to just below my rear end. Add a small pad for your legs and a good topquilt..it can work.
I did play with the adjustments to get a good fit on the hammock. Once that was dialed in, it worked well.

Call it a half uq and wear it proudly as a good multi-use item.

Here's the thread I did on the down undercoat project.
    http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=10303

    The pic's may be helpful.
I used it a couple weeks down to 40* with a small pad, I was fine.
