    Best webbing

I am looking for the best type of webbing. Nylon, Polyester, or Polypropylene.
I know Speer sells polypro and I think nylon stretches, so how about Polyester?

Also do you think I could get away with skinnier tree huggers than the standard 1 inch? 3/4rths maybe...5/8ths......1/2 possibly?

    webbing

    Hi,
I use 1" polyester webbing for all my hammocks. Very little stretch and holds up really well. I get it from Strapworks which is a great company to deal with and he ships really fast.

I use 1" polypro... I wouldn't do nylon because of stretch and it's strength gets halved when it's wet... I only really went with polypro because I would have had to order the polyester

i think polyester gets the highest rating from all the discussion i've read here.
and one good source i'm planning to order my next webbing from is OWF.
their polyester is lighter than some of the others.

nothing scientific, just my opinion but i don't plan to use any thing less than 1" wide webbing.
3/4" might be ok but the smaller you get, the closer you get to the effect of rope on tree.
plus, you'd have to pay more $ to get an acceptable strength, & at a very small reduction in weight & bulk.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

dutch, 3/4 would probably work, still alot better than rope, but it is harder to find. i ordered lots of samples, and i found the 2000# owf camo 1" polyester that slowhike was talking about is about as light as you'd want to go. i tried 1700# 1500# and 1300#,1100#. and they all had much more noticable stretch than the owf webbing which stretches very very little. they will hold your weight just fine though. the strapworks is the only one that stretches less, but is almost twice as heavy. the owf is not much heavier than the lighter ones, but stretches alot less. it may have something to do with a different weave than all the others, as it is stronger # for # as well.

basically if you can find 1/2 or 3/4" that's strong enough, it will probably end up being about the same weight as the owf.

as far as i know, there are no spectra webbings that are any lighter than the owf. www.apsltd.com has some, but i think it's heavier, and www.yates.com has some 13mm, and i know it's heavier. the owf weighs 6.125 g/ft if you want to try looking, but lighter polyester may very likely give alot more stretch than the owf or strapworks.

I also use OWF woodland green camo 1" ployester. Weighs about the same as Speer polypro.

i believe it's rated at 700lbs. that's probably conservative but i did break a length of it one time at hot springs. i was using two trees that were quite a bit farther apart than i normally use.
ed said he had never seen it break like that. maybe it was just one of those unusual circumstances were the webbing was below par?

Slowhike, did it break at a knot? I weigh 170#, do you weigh more than that?

I was thinking of making my own treehuggers from this stuff with an SMC ring sewn into one end.
