RE: too much down
I guess too much overstuff is wasted down but it sure makes for a prudy looking UQ.
So now you will be watching the weather forecast hoping for a Cold Front and Chance of Snow.

On custom leather car seats its called "accent stiching" and you pay more for it.my second mistake. I decided to use contrasting color thread
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !
Thank you all for your kind words. I appreciate it.
I decided to test the quilt last night on my porch and my thermometer tells me that it hit a low of 43 F which isn't cold enough but not bad. I slept in long pants, cotton socks, and a short sleeve shirt with no head covering. I used my new underquilt (newly named by WeaselGirl as The Black Goose) and my 2" Red River Gorge top quilt. I used a folded 3/4 length REI self inflating pad (thermorest knock off) as leg and foot insulation stuffed into the footbox.
Like most hammocking experiences, there is a learning curve. I had to adjust the pad once or twice in the night when it slipped down below my knees and I think I need to tighten the suspension a bit, but I was toasty and very comfortable. I slept really well and for once, I feel rested. I awoke to find WeaselGirl staring at me through the bug mesh and complaining that she wasn't given the opportunity to sleep there.
We live down here at 2000 feet but we live next to Mt. Ashland which tops out at 7500 feet. I think, very soon, we'll be going up in search of colder weather for pre-winter camping testing.

You'll be a warm weasel now. that thing is fluffy!!!
Nice work and nobody will notice the stitching 'cept you.
Good work.
Ambulo tua ambulo.
Great lookig quilt, FreeTheWeasel! I know what you mean about the contrasting stitches, lol. If this nice quilt took only 20 hours, you are doing betterthen me!
I found have to make my end seam allowance 2.5 inches!
Great looking quilt! If and when we decide to try our own hand at one of these, your pictures will be of great value! Thanks for posting them.

that came out great,
cant wait to hear some reports after some cold weather.
i made mine when i still lived in california,
im going to have to make a thicker one like yours for the montana winters.
What a great job on that quilt! It is probably going to be warm enough for deep winter temps. No wonder you are going this route vs a HHSS!
How much loft do you have on that thing? Hard to tell from the ruler pic, looks like over 4" and maybe a good bit more. 5 or 6"?
Loft is a funny thing. It is easy to push all the down to one end for the photo and make it look like Monster Down, but I'm guessing it is somewhere between 5 and 5.5 inches at the center of the tubes with the down evenly distributed. I set the inner wall height to 4 inches and the maximum loft appears at the center of the fabric.
I really am waiting for the big freeze. For whatever reason, I've always been a bit colder than one would expect from the temp ratings and I'm hopeful that this quilt will finally get me into the sub freezing temperatures comfortably. Normally, I am roasting all the time, but in a hammock, I'm a big wimp I guess.
Thanks.
