The Treklight biners are a great deal. The webbing wrapped around the tree is taking most of the weight.

ALL regular climbing biners are made from Aluminum. They are usually rated to 5000lbs (22kN). Just make sure they're climbing rated and you'll be fine.

The steel ones are hard to find, very heavy and only used for VERY specialized purposes. With as was mentioned strengths well beyond the 5000lbs of the aluminum ones... Its unlikely you'll need more than the climbing biners for any hammock hanging.

The Camp Nanowire biner is the best strength/weight/cost trade off in a biner. You can get slightly lighter for about 30% more money. Or you can get much bigger and heavier for about 30% less money... But most climbing biners are at least $4....

Hey I found some carabiners at Walmart that say they hold weight up to 700lbs.

They don't say anything about climbing. So, is 700lbs good enough?

They might work but I'd get something else stronger just to be on the safe side.
The Treklight ones are not climbing rated and have 1100lb.strength.

My local outfitter, Alabama Outdoors, has semiannual customer appreciation days. Got a pair of "nano wires" for about $6 apiece during the sale.

yep always have to look at the total cost - sometiems its cheaper locally sometiems you have to shop between online merchants for a good shipping deal.

Where have you found the SMC rings for a dollar? Cheapest I've seen them is about $2.50 each.

Im useing the Trango HMS carabiners. They weigh in at 3oz each. I got mine on ebay for $16 for the pair. Rated <>24kn

Those might be a bit overkill, but they sure are nice looking!
