    Nylon vs. Ripstop Nylon

Just wondering what the strength difference would be between Nylon vs. Ripstop Nylon.

My 7yr old daughter wants a hammock
but pink, and the local store only has pink in nylon ????

She's about fifty pounds and she wants it for in the house and camping.

No worries on the strength of regular nylon: my first DIY hammock is now almost three years old, made of non-ripstop, and is holding up perfectly. It's really bright blue, tho- so my 12-yr-old uses it more than I do. I use my subdued green ripstop material 'mock.

I weigh substantially more than your daughter. The only difference in the ripstop is the addition of threads which stop any tears from extending the length of the fabric. Oherwise, feel, workability, strength, and appearance from 10 feet away are all identical!

    Shouldn't be a problem.

Hennessy doesn't use ripstop on a lot of his hammock models.

The ripstop doesn't really serve any purpose in a hammock. For clothing it does, but not a hammock. If a rip starts in a hammock the ripstop threads are not going to stop it when you get into the the hammock.

Yeah, shouldn't be a problem. Just got a WBBB 1.7 dbl and it's not ripstop nylon. So....good enough for the blackbird.........

Nylon or polyester taffeta is my choice over ripstop. The tightly woven thin nylon or polyester is most likely taffeta. Of course if you get it from a real fabric store just ask... they can tell you that much.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I wish I'd seen this when I was at Hancock's last week. They're having a huge warehouse sale, I almost picked up some camo non-ripstop for stuff sacks at 50% off...

The advantage of ripstop is that it "may" stop rips. However, in the case of a loaded hammock, I seriously doubt that a rip, once begun is gonna stop until your bum hits the ground

On the other hand, in an abrasion situation, ripstop can actually be a disadvantage. The little bumps in the ripstop receive a concentration of force from the abrasion and the failure starts there.
