On my first differential quilt, I sewed darts into both inner and outer shells, probably because I had read it here. I had six baffle inch spacing on the inner shell and seven inch spacing on the outer. I sewed 2 inch darts into both so the inner and outer shapes so they somewhat mirrored each other.
I think the advantage is that when it is time to gather the ends together, there isn't so much material on the outer shell to sew up into pleats. Also, it helps pull the outer shell into roughly the same shape which I think might help save weight instead of having really floppy ends while the middle is narrow.
Truth is, though, that I am going to have to experiment with the second one I build. When I hang the quilt, the outer shell seems a bit tighter than I would have expected. I may have taken up too much material on the outer shell or I may have needed more differential than one inch.
Oh, and I overstuffed the boogers out the quilt: probably way too much. I factored in 20% without factoring in the reduced volume due to the pleats. Woo hoo that thing is puffy.
