I kind of like the groups idea. The map is great but not everyone is on it and some folks prefer not to put their actual location (witness protection programs and the like).
If groups were enabled, I would hope that anyone from any area would be able to join or access them. Like others, I have driven through more than one state out side of the Republic to hang and would like to be able to know what's going on in other places.
Wow, didn't think this suggestion would generate so much discussion. I'm hearing some great points for both sides.
As a developer who does a lot of work with vBulletin, my intent was just to make sure the admins knew this feature was available. If you guys have specific reasons for keeping it turned off, then just ignore me!
I'm still pretty new to the forum and haven't cut my teeth yet, so hopefully I haven't offended anyone...

i think it would be a nice option in edition to the google map (which can be hard to view).
the linkage of groups geographically directly in HF is a positive -
people could easily arrange to meet for an afternoon hang and gear-n-tell.
not everyone is able to get into the pineys at the same time for overnighters-----HF groups would simply make it easier for those close to one another to learn hands on, rather than via videos, diagrams and explanations.

I pm'd JustJeff this exact idea a couple of weeks ago. It would be a viable tool allowing the groups to better organize and share trip information. Unfortunately, I received no reply.
