    Mosquito protection with 1.1 Single?

I've read some horror stories of people getting eaten alive by critters through the bottom of their mosquito hammocks. Conventional wisdom on the forum seems to be that 2 layers of fabric, or a pad/UQ beneath you is needed to prevent bites through the hammock under-fabric. I've been leaning toward getting a double layer BB for that reason, but I like the weight savings of the single layer version.

Anyone have experience with a Blackbird 1.1 single layer in mosquito country? Is this really something to worry about? I plan on using a pad/UQ at anything under 70 degrees but I'm pretty allergic to mosquito bites. Color me paranoid but I'd rather be on the safe side in case I end up off the pad or am using it in higher temps without under insulation.

Many members here treat their hammocks with permethrin to keep the bugs at bay. From what I have read one treatment can last weeks. Hopefully someone who does it can chime in. Its a viable option instead of increasing your hammock weight soley for bug protection.

Permethrin treatment does work. I treated all my hammocks. While the skeeters are out in force right now they are staying away from my hammock that I treated.

My only problem is that I have to get to the hammock first.

Odds, thanks for mentioning that... I forgot about permethrin in my post. I generally try to avoid chemicals. I know it's a source of debate, and I'm not looking to go down that rathole. For myself I'd prefer mechanical means of prevention even if it's a few extra oz.

Thanks Bomber, that's good to know. If the 1.7 isn't thick enough it's a safe bet 1.1 won't be any better

Try and get some info from Warbonnetguy, i read somewhere that the 1.1 fabric has a tighter/denser weave.... but when my head is against the side of my hammock - i get stung

PS if you dont toss and turn when you sleep, some kind of pillow will stop the little critters(thats what i do - YMMV)

Yeah, I'm thinking double layer is the way to go after all. I was kind of hoping maybe the mosquito thing is overblown for single layer hammocks

On the plus side, it is nice to have the pad pockets if I'm not using an UQ or want to extend it in cold weather with a pad.

i recall reading that most 1.1 ripstop has a tighter weave than 1.7 which makes it tougher for the skeeters to get through.

as long as you don't have anything smaller than mosquitoes, like noseeums, a tulle bugsock is a cheap and lightweight option. there have been a few threads that have discussed diy instructions for tulle bug nets.
