Stairguy has put forward a suggestion for Saturday dinner...(can you tell he's worked a lot with Boy Scouts!!)

For communal dinner Sat. night we could do a group soup. Everyone brings a few of their own brats or dogs to roast for themselves, and a can of non-cream based soup to add to the communal pot. I've also come across a recipe for maple syrup candy over a fire that I'm thinkin about.
This sounds simple and good to me. I'm thinking of adding some pita bread (warmed by the fire) as a "bun" for a brat that has been "stick cooked" over a fire. Easy to do, not much cleanup.

    Any other suggestions?

I have a lot of Harmony House dried veggies that will go very well in a soup.

I think a good "Soup Cowboy" would be great. I'll bring some home grown onins and garlic for the pot.

I'll also do some baking for dessert.

Since it's colder than many of us are used to...should we be worried about our cars not starting on Sunday departure?

Do we have emergency plans in case someone has an accident or needs medical attention?

Just trying to be prepared. You guys know this weather better than I do (even though Chicago can get rough, just not Minnesota winter rough), I'm just thinking ahead and voicing any concerns that may come up. It's only a month away!

That's a good point! I would get a block heater installed, if anyone here knew anything about them...

    Re: Cars Starting

We should have enough cars that WILL start and jumper cables so that you'll be ok (he said bravely!). IF your car battery is a bit old, you may wish to have it checked or replaced as a general "good idea" pre-winter precaution. While it is possible to get cold enough so that car batteries won't have enough juice to work, that's extremely unlikely (think -50 degrees F.).

If you don't have one, a "winter kit" for your car with extra warm clothing, blanket (or sleeping bag), flashlight, candles, jumper cables, washer fluid and a shovel is a good idea. (The shovel part, especially).

BTW, block heaters need electricity to work. Our parking area is the yard of a farm. 'Nuff said!

If someone needs medical attention beyond first-aid, we can evacuate them to the nearest medical facility (Sandstone, Pine City, Siren or Grantsburg).
