My winter set-up is similar and I have always wondered about the lower limits.
I couldn't have gone a third night with my gear regardless of temp unless I could have thoroughly dried out my quilts. The frost accumulation really starts to degrade the effectiveness of the down. When it stays cold the next day the frost/icing doesn't dry out on it's own like it does for three season camping. I was cold at 5am on the last day and had no choice but to get up early and start packing up right away to get myself warmed up. The big key when you get cold is to get active whether it be trudging through the snow or just going for a walk. My toes and fingers were numb and I grabbed a pair of glove warmers (felt like ice cubes for about 15 minutes until they started to work) and then I started packing up my gear, digging out snow stakes etc. and within 20 to 30 minutes I felt warmed up again. Amazing what body heat will do for you. Just getting the circulation going and general body heat will heat up the susceptible areas like hands and feet and you start to feel much better.

I started a new post in Trip Reports, so we don't have to go to page 40!

    http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=26995

Pizza, if you could copy your post and link to your great pics over there, we can keep them all together. I'm sure there are more pics to come, along with some good videos in the next few days.

(Perhaps we should close this thread)

Just wanted to post a a thank-you to Fourdog and Firekeeper! Your patience, skills and teaching was very much appreciated. I very much enjoyed this trip and hope this is something we can repeat each year! The most important lesson for me was how important a fire can be in these conditions. We needed fire to dry our clothing, sleeping bags, cook our food and help keep us warm. The fire was also the area where we would gather and learn from each other. I think just about everyone on this trip was surprised at how much moisture that was generated from sleeping. Your sleeping bag was frozen with moisture from breathing, but also from your body. The inside of your tarp, netting was frozen with moisture. The bottom of your hammock collected moisture and froze. Fourdog was correct when he said you just have to manage the moisture and can't really stop it. He was right about this.

Thanks Pizza for the pics and the write up. Personally i thought Four Dogs was insightful and considerate bringing the tent and heater. I think its great to gain skills slowly with plan B close at hand. Cold temps and snow/wet are not very forgiving, not allot of room for learning the hard way . For those of us who are not skilled at winter hammock camping reports like this are an education and i'm happy for them tho i don't see myself going out at -15. Glad everyone had a good time and i look forward to more report from others.
