Amateur NC hanger ready to go pro

    Hello all,

Been posting recently on the Linville Gorge forums and used to be fairly active on Backpacking.net but wasn't very active in the actual activity till more recently.
Been doing a fall trip the last several years running but hadn't kept up with gear with years. Did the gorge this month and Uwharrie the past two years. I'm also into paddling. We did a 34 mile float down a section of the Neuse river and another out the Shackleford island over the last few years.

As I was preparing for the big ditch I started reading about whoopie slings and all this other fun stuff that's come about when I wasn't paying attention. I've been watching the 'we don't sew' videos as I'm BIG on tinkering and such (I own the whole MAKE magazine collection) and Shug's as well.

Planning on spending more time tinkering on the gear and maybe I'll even make it out to the gorge for the annual hang next year.

I currently use an HH but I've decided I HATE the velcro fly and I'm thinking of getting some wally ripstop and making my own in the near future.

Next trip 'might' be out to the Neusiok trail in Croatan NF early '11.

You could get the HH modded by 2Q/ZQ to add a side-entry zipper. That's a very popular mod.

Welcome to the forum Gqgeek. I would definitely look up 2Q/ZQ if I were you. I am planning on getting mod #4 myself once I save up a little cash. However, it would also certainly be a fun adventure to make your own hammock as well as I also plan on doing this in the (hopefully near) future.

    RE

    Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I did watch Ralloh's video on Mod #4 and it looks pretty sweet but considering I've already done some thread injecting in the past and seeing the cost of the mod, I think I'm going to toy around with just starting from scratch.

I'm thinking new straps, carbon arrow toggles, dutch clips or biners, whoopie slings, and Lash-it ridge line along with a Sgt. Rock style bug sock.

I've had luck in the past getting ripstop at the local Wally so if I can get some more I can try making my own and either go with what I come up with or consider it a prototype for something lighter. If it doesn't work, everything but the fabric from Wally should work to retrofit my HH.
I'd be a bit nervous doing so but I could 'probably' do the mod 4 myself if I get some practice on the machine first. It has been a while.
Cutting the mesh out and replacing it with the bug sock would probably be easier and just imagine the looks I'd get from my friends who'd never do such a thing.

    re

    Nadda Shug

I was just up there on the 12th for the first time and I am hooked.

I think I want to go back and see Shortoff and maybe daffodil flats next spring and if the timing works out I may get out there next fall for the hang.

Got to try livermush for first time.

Made me think of a burger made with a beef patty and a veggie patty.
I guess the liver flavor varies with brand. I was expecting a bit more liverwurst flavor based on Andrew Zimmern's reaction at the Shelby festival.

We also detoured down to Lexington for some BBQ and Honeymonks on the way on. I'd put the slaw on everything if they made it on this side of the state.
