    Hammock Forum OVERLOAD!!!

I know that I am new to this and all, but it seems that I have trouble deciding which threads to read. I would love to read all of them, but there is just not enough time in the day it seems. I imagine many others have this same problem. How do you deal with this? Is there some kind of counseling thread that eases has calming hammock photos to help ease the stress of not being able to get to it all??? (If not, there should be.)

Does anybody else think about this sometime, or am I just crazy? (No need to answer that second part, I already know I am a little out there.)

    Hi Mate,

    I have the same problem. I generally only do 2 things;
-skim over the new posts and if the heading is something I'm interested in, I'll read the thread.
-Use the search functionality to find posts related to a specific topic I'm interested in at any particular time. Unfortunately, there are so many threads all on the same topic so this can also be a bit tiresome, but the search engine is quite good at narrowing down the results.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,
    Russ

The best cure for HF overload is to go snuggle up in your hammock, or better yet, go on a weekend backpacking trip with your hammock. By far the WORST thing you can do is go on an HF group hang because all you will want to do is refresh the threads to see if someone has responded to your question about the upcoming hang.

Pick one topic at a time and read a few threads.

Other stuff you will run across will be important later, when you start searching that topic.

    Take your time,

Welcome to HF my name is bigbamaguy and I will be your tour guide............1st we are going to request that you watch the Hammock for Noobs videos from the Pied Piper of Hammocks and HF member: Shug!!!!! here is the link to the first video: http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/v...ls&videoid=189.

Once this accomplished, understanding that there is no cure for the info overload we recommend that you take it slowly and ask as many questions as you feel you need to ask.

Seriously though, the information is mountainous and seems to be never ending but eventually it will all make sense and then there are new things to learn.........I have been on this site almost everyday for over a year and a half and still find things that are new and interesting.

Skim the threads, the ones you really want to follow you can "subscribe" to...

Look for the Thread Subscription menu option above the thread... Choose instant email. You'll get ONE email (regardless of the number of replies) when a reply is posted until you login next time. Check your email, click on the link and you're on that thread...

Then buy an industrial sized coffee pot, and 3-4 subscriptions to the Coffee of the month club...

When you get interested in a particular topic, do a search...

When I first joined, I browsed the subforums of interest to me, reading threads that piqued my interest. As I got to know the terms and jargon and stuff, I had a better idea of how I wanted to make my hammock and was able to search more effectively for information.

However, the best learning came from setting my new hammock up and actually testing it out and feeling first hand what I read about on the forum.

Welcome to HF. I suggest reading all the Sticky threads first. As you scan each of the sub-forums, you will notice the "Sticky" threads at the top. Also, look through the videos, they will give you a good idea of topics you are more interested in.

When I started I picked a topic to learn about and concentrated on that. For instance the first thing I wanted to purchase was a hammock. I read all their was on bridges, HH, Grand Trunk, ENO, WBBB etc. By reading these threads I learned about what I needed to as well as raised other questions.
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

    Overload??
Wait till you finally become a donating member

It may help to contact some local members and see the gear firsthand...

Then again...the last new guy we had at a group hang, his head exploded in "gear overload".
It might help to see the new gear, take a camera.

The only real help I can offer with the ever intoxicating gear addiction is to
RUN!! OR USE THE "OFF" BUTTON.
