For me it only becomes a critical issue when it interferes with the stuff I gotta accomplish in my life. I cruise HF mostly early morning, late night, occasionally on breaks at work. It is so tempting to spend hours, rather I just take time during the "off" times in my life. Work, home and marriage do not suffer as a result.

I look at current posts, try to keep up on what interests me most. I especially like the donating member stuff cuz I have been here enuf that the off topic stuff reflecting perspectives of various personalities is as colorful as anything on the forum.

There is no better resource anywhere for what we do. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

Then again...the last new guy we had at a group hang, his head exploded in "gear overload".
It might help to see the new gear, take a camera.

I can see how that might happen to a new guy.

I will be sure to pay attention to all the different gear at the First Annual Florida Hang, and hopefully I will learn quite a bit.

First thing, I always click on the "New Posts" button on the bar at the top of the page. This shows me everything that has come in since my last visit. Sometimes, that was only 10 minutes ago, so the list is only a couple of pages.
I scan those for topics of interest or check the original poster. Some people, I'll read whatever they have to say.
As a side note to some posters, if I can't tell from the title what it's about, I'm not going to look at it.
I love to read trip reports and I'll usually check the For Sale Forum.
I also subscribe so for every topic that I post on, I get an email if it gets a new comment.

Yep, I agree with Canoebie...eat the elephant (venison taste's much better) one bite at a time, and don't let the wife and real life suffer (you will be glad you did). And even though "implosion" may occur from gear overload at a group hang...it sure is fun to watch!

    Oh yeah...I almost forgot.....YMMV/HYOH.
