    Happens that I use a variant of the pack leash meself. Just a 6' piece of cord : long enough to go around a modest tree doubled over plus some. Clove-hitch around the tree, form a marlin-spike hitch on the tails (use a trail stick), hook the pack loop around the marlin spike.
    I too use a similar technique. Saves on the tired back after a long hike. Also keeps critters out of my stuff. At night I put my rain cover over the pack to keep dew and unexpected weather out as well.
