I know this sounds silly, but could someone explain to me why one would not want the entire guy line to be made of shock cord?

Maybe durability and cost.

I was thinking the same thing.
seems like the only draw back is a tent stake could go flying possibly through your tarp if it came loose. but I bet it would work out ok.
Because you fall through the clouds if you try to lay on them, so the next best thing is a hammock.
...and weight.

There would be too much stretch, it weighs too much, and it would absorb water & take forever to dry .... oh, then there's the thing about flying arrows metioned above
Makes sense now. Thanks
I use them for my side pull-outs .... a bit more forgiving when folks trip on those lines!
Wee bit heavier. Been using them in the winter more.

I have 3 foot of 1/8" shock cord attached to the tarp and no tangle after that and I like it. No more walking like a ape under the lines when I set the tarp up high for a view. Trip hazard damage to tarp is greatly reduced if not eliminated and i can pass under them with a wave of my hand. I set my stakes very carefully and quickly using a clove hitch without having any missile launches.
Not sure why someone would want an entire guy line made of it. But I added 6 inch shock cords to my guy outs at the corners of my tarp using stoikurt method mentioned in the DYI section on page 3 of the shock cord tensioners post. They work great and I have not had any missiles launched as of yet.
I miss my 4.8Lb base weight as a ground dweller...But I sure DON'T MISS the ground.
I like shock cord guy lines...gotta work hard to tangle them.
