    Down overstuff diminishing return question.

Assuming the same coverage, which should be warmer?

2.5" loft with 25% overstuff. Or

    3.0" loft with 10% overstuff.

Or am I flailing at gnats?

What is the definition of overstuff? Is it something like: adding down to the point that the nylon puffs up higher than the baffles by some X %? I don't really know. But if it is something like that, then 25% overstuff with max loft of 2.5" is still less loft than 3", even if the latter only has 10% overstuff. So you still have more loft, thus more warmth. Now I don't know if there is some other advantage to overstuff, other than just trying to gain some more loft past the baffles?

I have oft heard than somewhat denser down, with all other things (loft, baffles etc) being equal, is a bit warmer. IOW, 3" worth of more densely packed baffles will be somewhat warmer than 3" worth of less densely packed chambers. But I think if you are comparing 3" to 2.5", the 3" will be warmer regardless of density.

    Anyone know for sure?
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us....that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now.

That's why I ask. I posed a question elsewhere of whether there was value in overstuffing and got several responses indicating that some overstuff was better than higher loft in some instances.

Overstuff = more than exactly enough down to fill the cubic volume of the item

I'm starting an UQ and trying to decide which of the stated options to go with.

    Thanks for the response.

I vote for 3" with 10% overstuff. Seems like most overstuff quilts offered don't go past 15%, so the 2.5" with 25% overstuff probably has diminishing returns.

it was my impression that the reason for overstuff was because of loss of down loft after repeated compression and uncompression.
