    spraypaint: Spinn and Krylon?

    Howdy folks,

I hope I'm not suggesting a sacrilege: I have an OES spinnul (not silnylon as written above) tarp that I'm really happy with, but the lightish grey color stands out way too much for my liking. So, I'm thinking of giving it a new tone. Has anybody ever experimented with Krylon or similar spraypaint on silnylon? Will the tarp disintegrate or melt away in little blue flames? Or will it draw humidity like a sponge? Any idea?

Any input is very much appreciated!

    Thanks a bunch!

Ever tried to change the color of silicone, personally I don't think it will work, paint has to be able to grab on the surface to hold and stay on, sil is so slippery by nature
You can Always try on a piece of scrap first but I think that as soon as you fold the tarp the paint will fall off!

Maybe soak it in fabric dye like ritdye or something along those lines?

The paint would crack and eventualy chip off.

dye on natural fibres (cotton) will work no problem, but on synthetics it's a totally different story, the original color is added to the batch with which they make the threads to make the fabric, so even uncoated nylon is a pita to change color, but SIL nylon will be even worst, the silicone will prevent the dye or paint to bind with the fabric.
just go to a shoe store, buy liquid silicone (to protect shoes and boots) and try to get it to change color (food coloring, dye, etc) good luck

Memories...My first post was this same question. Sadly, it doesn't work any better now than it did then.

The best you can do is use the paint specifically for plastics, and while it will flake off, you'll have a very faint tinting and the surface will dull. I tested gray fabric with brown paint, and it can best be described as a "dirty" look. I don't think it will affect the performance of the tarp, but I only painted scraps that were never tested. Colored markers, as in Sharpies, will work, but that is considerably more labor.

It seems really counterintuitive to paint Spinn. The primary reason for it over Sil or coated nylon tarps is weight savings, so adding weight back removes part of the appeal, IMO.

Perhaps you could sell the Spinn tarp and buy a different tarp in a color that pleases you more?

After reading your report on your first outing with this setup, I wondered the same thing.

Here's a silly thought - a piece of no-see-um cut to the same size as the tarp. It would have Soft Shackle Prusiks where it would attach to the tarp at each tie-out point. You could even spray paint the netting any color you want if you like. This would add maybe 2 ounces to your setup. Thoughts?

I like the sound of that, It would only add weight if you needed to be in "Stealth" mode. If it didn't matter you could leave it at home.

Would be interested in knowing how much the mesh difussed the colour of the spin when held hard against it.

Were's the best spot to buy this stuff from, I'm in Australai and would need somene that ships internationally.

I agree and don't think the paint thing would work.

Saupacker, I know where you are coming from. I the bush that grey fabric certainly stands out.
