    A good basecamp tarp?

    Anyone heard of this tarp?
    Kelty Car Tarp http://t.co/ZyPBS7L

The Clymb has them 1/2 price at $55.
Would this be a good basecamp tarp?
I haven't used one with poles.
3-4 Lb would be too heavy for trail use.

I didn't see any specs on the tarp, but Kelty makes good equipment. I wouldn't be at all hesitant to use a Kelty product.

Did you see the size listed on it?

It has a funky shape. Not symetrical.

At first glance the size doesn't seem to justify it weighing 3-4#. I agree with Bobby, I've owned Kelty packs and tents in the past and they've always been good quality.

Must be thick material to weigh so much... or ruberized coating. May pick one up for Cub Scout camping. Those kids have a knack for shredding gear, especially lightweight backpacking gear. This should stand a better chance of surviving.

Or the other option are the footprints listed below that tent. They could be cut and sewn into some nice tarps. Most are black or gray in color I believe. Yea, heavier than sil but cheap! Could be a nice first DIY.

Personally I think the Kelty Noah 12X12 makes a better basecamp tarp. Lots of room, can be closed off on the ends like doors.

Good point. My first hammocking DIY project was a heavy-ish 1.9 sil tarp (just a few weeks ago, in fact), and I've probably got $40-50 in material costs, all things considered.

This one looks like a good deal for the size

Just not sure how heavy "1800mm PU Nylon Taffeta" is.

hmmm. I couldn't figure out exactly what the Car Tarp shape is from the lone image they posted. Googled and found this:
    http://www.hikers.co.jp/86_751.html

Which, although in Japanese, appears to be the odd shape of the car tarp. Not sure what to make of that shape.

I just recently Pu a 12x15 OES rectangle tarp for base camp with the kids. It's a very nice piece.
