    Ashman,
I see that you are in Greensboro, NC. There are several folks on the board from NC and SC and they have camp outs where they specifically get together to review gear and basically have a good time. Keep your eye out for some of those posts or even send a private message (pm) to some of them and maybe arrange a meeting or camp out. We're all pretty helpful here. Many of us even have extra gear that we can bring to the hang outs for new people to try.

But, living in Dallas I don't get to make many of these hangouts.
However, we are looking at putting something together either in East Texas or maybe Arkansas.

If it's in a fun place I may actually come! Let us know about your campout. Mule (another newby).

Ashman, I don't know what you define as close but I like the wilsoncreek area... it has some cliffs with good views and a pretty good set of stream/falls within about 1.5 miles of the most westerly primitive site(car camping)... tons of good hammock sites. They carry the park/topo at the REI's. All in all its about 4 hours from raleigh so maybe 3 for you. I think some friends and I will be headed out there for an overnighter this coming weekend if we are all cleared with work

    re: camping with kids...

I'd be happy to go with ya sometime, and bring 1-3 of my kids... it'll have to warm up some though, since I don't have enough winter gear for all of them... (yet).

I'd go with you guys. Im in Southern Pines, only about an hour south of Greensboro. Im working on an insulated hammock sock now, would love to test it soon (inspired by NCPatrick).

Yeah, that would be fun. Hope you won't mind having kids around.

I'd like to see your insulated hammock sock. Be sure to post pictures.

Ive got a a 2 year old daughter... I like kids! Cant wait til she can go. I've got the sock planned out.. im searching now for a cheap down bag I can cut and sew in the sock for insulation. This definitely isnt a weight conscious build. Well, maybe. We'll see.

Sounds interesting. I'll keep my eyes peeled for anyone selling a down bag cheap (but cheap is a relative term, and especially when it concerns anything made with down).
