    Newbie stuff on UQ's

A few very basic things about under quilts:
What makes a good one? Why so expensive? Do they come cheap? How cheap / difficult are they to make?
Being only a fair weather hanger i have no experience with any of these, all help greatly appreciated
    Cheers

A lot of quilts are made with high-quality down, which can be expensive. Still, most of the cottage manufacturers sell them at extremely competitive prices. Synthetic quilts are typically less expensive -- our own pgibson from arrowhead sells many of those. You can always try a pull-up bag -- pull your sleeping bag around your hammock.

You can also try making quilts yourself. I've made a few out of poncho liners (search for the PLUQ).

A really affordable UQ is the MMG IX UQ. I've successfully tested it in the 30s now and am quite pleased.

I've made several quilts out of Climashield for $60 or less. - way less with WW discount fabric.

When you buy a quilt you are paying for the down....and the time it takes to make it
to be honest after making quilts you can see why they cost so much....after you add in all the time it took you it comes out to around the same as buying one from a vendor

now for who makes a good one...i think all the vendors make good ones..it all comes down to what you are looking for in an UQ

as for cost...there all around the same price range ...$180-$220 for a 3 season $220-$400 for a winter
AHE is the only Synth UQ maker right now .
he had a 2/3 lengh for $125 ...thats a pretty good price if you ask me
i know Warbonnet and JRB has sales going on right now that you might want to check out
Stormcrow makes some really nice UQ as well..he has a bit of a wait time right now but they are worth the wait if you ask me
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold
