    My Cali Journey!

Just wanted to let everyone know that I'm safe in California and my brother Sonic and I have been Hanging and having a good time.

The first night I arrived here I was pretty out of it after driving straight through from Amarillo. I was greeted in the Angeles National Forest by Sonic and some of his buddies. I set up camp in his backyard and crashed hard.

Sounds a little disappointing, but we've already been to the Sequoia National Forest to hang out. We arrive at a very wet campsite. Apparently it had snowed in the mountains and everything was soaked through. We even batoned some wood to try and find dry fuel to burn and we were unsuccessful at that for the most part. We used all of my dry hickory, 2 bottles of heet and a full bottle of snotballs to try and start ONE fire. The temperature for the one night we stayed was 34 degrees, but we stayed warm in our Blackbirds. I plan on coming back here in the summer so we can camp out in warmer weather.

Although the Sequioa trip didn't last as long as I had hoped, the extra time here in Cali will be used to camp out in areas Sonic hasn't been too. We'll be working on some DIY gear as well, making whoopies and a few stufsacks, maybe even some doors for my tarp!

I'll post more as the weeks go by. I'm spending about another week and a half in cali so there will be lots more to report on!

I'll post the pics we took at the SNF soon, as well as other spots we've hung. Until next time!

    Welcome to California Cogneto!

I sure hope you get to stay longer next time. SNF is an incredible place, full of rugged terrain that humbles any man.

Here is a shot of the Kaweah River near Panther Creek and also a link to a file about back country meals I put together if you'd like to give some feedback.

Good report Cogneato, sounds like you are having a time of it! Don't worry about not being able to start a fire in wet weather conditions; it's a skill that takes practice like anything else. At least your life wasn't depending on it!

When you get back we can hit a few spots and practice some wet weather fire building. I will show you my Sven-saw!

Leaving Monday for CA with my new WBBB 1.0. I'll be staying in Temecula for six weeks if anyone wants to hang in SoCal. I'll have wheels and enough gear to car camp... love to hit the road.

It's definitely a skill i'm wanting to learn now. Thanks for the willingness to show me some tricks! When I get back I'll get in touch with you and we can go hike the Georgetown loop one weekend.

When we were in the SNF we camped near Bear Creek. We broke camp around noon and started hiking the Hidden Falls area. It was the first time I've ever drank water from a stream and didn't purify it. Tasted great!

I'll be here for another week and a half, so I'll be doing plenty of hanging. Check back for updates!

    Welcome to California.

Don't forget to purify the water!

Won't tell you all the horror stories of water in national forests being polluted by... yeah, won't tell you horror stories.
