It is attached straight through.
I use a backing line for fly fishing. It is very strong

When you say "attached straight through," what exactly do you mean? Is it just pushed into the amsteel with the fid after the making the loop?

I think he means its attached straight through (orthogonally) a section of the amsteel that will be buried when the shackle is closed but may be exposed when the shackle is open.
