Redtail, thanks! This is great. I walk to work quite a bit and work out at a gym. I'm always looking for free mp3 podcasts. Didn't know about LibriVox. Looks like a great site.
Most probably know about it, but for any newbies -- Backpackinglight also has free hiking podcasts.

Since I'm almost always hiking with Smee or motorcycling with another bud and our hammocks are in close proximity we shoot the breeze for an hour or so then sleep....personally, I have no trouble getting in 12 hours of sleep... just means an extra bio break... then back to sleep in 10 minutes or so.... After all....our hammocks are twice as comfortable as the ground.... why shouldn't we sleep twice as long....
Alternatively, full tents do make it nice to hang out as Turk notes.

There are also some great podcasts over at the Practical Backpacking forums. I can imagine listening to some of these on a long winter night...
"Civilization is the limitless multiplication of unnecessary necessities." - Mark Twain
“I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.” - John Burroughs
Most nights if hiking it's dinner then a little chatting then bed, if it was a tough day, dinner then bed. If camping, it's sit around and talk then hunt down the boys and get them ready for bed. I'll get in my hammock with the intention of getting back up after they are asleep but that never works, I always fall asleep myself.
If I'm solo, a book or Ipod for entertainment- if it's not too cold I'll stay up outside the hammock as long as possible. I do a lot of camping in Shenandoah, so no fires allowed- except at the huts. There's plenty of NF land near me, once deer season ends, that's the place to go.
Qpens, are you up for a winter overnighter in the next couple of weeks?? Someplace in Shenandoah- or maybe along the AT in MD or NoVA..anyone else interested?
I usually just lay there and rest or think...don't get much time for that at home.
On my last trip, because it gets dark so early, I broke one of my rules and let Joker bring his gameboy. Made a huge difference - I could finish putzing around while he snuggled inside the hammock entertaining himself.
I have a video iPod for traveling but haven't brought it camping yet. Not sure I will.

Who cares about showers, gourmet food, using flush toilets. Just keep on walking and being away from it all.
There are times that the only way you can do something is to do it alone.
I go solo most trips this time of year. I like to have a nice fire for some uninterrupted dreaming/thinking time. (Rare when home with the kids) I also like to read or journal.

yep no doubt that the nights are longer but it also seems to me that everything I do takes longer on winter hikes so you may find that your time gets chewed up quickly. I find that cooking takes longer escpecaily if you are in a situation where you are melting snow for water. You will also possibly find that either you have to cut your miles down or you will have to hike longer into the the night to get the same distance. I guess I should say that this is the case if its real winter hiking ie snow on the ground and icy. To save on headlamp batteries I bring a glow stick to hang in the hammock. It only takes a bit for your eyes to adjust and then this will be plenty bright to read by or journal etc.
