How do you mark your silnylon?

Nothing I try seems to work for marking silnylon. Fabric pencils & markers just don't do it. I tried Scotch tape; doesn't stick. (lousy for laying out stuff, anyway) What works for you? Particularly for dark colors. I have brown and black silnylon on hand, and projects waiting. Thanks.

I've used Sharpies brand markers, but its permanent!

I second sharpies. Mine stick forever. I just cut the line off the material. Make sure it is a perment marker and nor dry erase.

Funny,
I had never thought of a regular marker. I've got sharpies laying all over the place. If I get cornfused and leave a mark where it can't be cut off or rolled into a hem, oh well, not many people are looking at my gear in the woods anyway.

I use Sharpies too. If it's dark material you can use paint pens.

i used a marker i got out of the sewing center. i think it`s called a fabric marker, but i`m not sure.
it looks like a pencil w/ a fat, white lead (but it`s not lead<g>).
you lick the white, crayon looking stuff coming out at the point to moisten it, then mark.
it leaves a white mark that will wash out or can be wiped away w/ anything wet. ...tim

My preference is a Sharpie, but if the material's too dark (like the Ed sil I used for my Black Cat tarp) I get a white paint pen. Works great, and the paint washes off later, at least when you're working on sil. Doesn't stick to the silicon, although it might be more permanent on non-treated fabric.

Thanks for the quick replies everybody. The Sharpie worked beautifully on the brown silnylon; I've laid out and cut the pieces for tarp hoods ala Ray Garlington. I also had a white marking pencil on hand, and licking it did indeed make it work on the black material. Live and learn.

On to the sewing machine now.

For my tarps, I have found that Sharpies don't really last that long, they dry up pretty quickly. The Marks-A-Lot markers (with the thicker point) last a *long* time, and they are much more utilitarian than the Sharpies.

Or, you can use a water-soluble pencil (not sure what kind of pencil, but I got it from a kite supply store). Makes very visable white marks that come right off with water/spit. Great when you want to make marks that will come off (marking stuff sacks).
