    Finished my blackcat tarp

Finally finished my blackcat-type tarp made from black silnylon and reinforced with the remains of the camo nylon I got from Barre's bargain bin. Got the seams sealed this weekend. Hung it in the garage on a super windy day and it seemed to hang in there real nice. Wasn't sure how long to make the lines so I did 6 feet, what length do you all use? Can't wait to give this a whirl.

Shiny! Isn't working with 100+ square feet of sil-nylon fun? I like the camo panel reinforcements, pretty slick. I use 12 foot guy-lines, but I am forever playing with pitching options. A tarp like that, with limited pitch options, you will proly be happy with 6 footers and a few small hanks tucked away somewhere if you need to add some feet to any of them.

Didn't get the sense of scale with this until I hung it. This is one HUGE tarp! Pretty sure you could park a car under it. Wasn't able to hang the hammock with it for a photo due to the wind, hoping that might happen later. Next up is an underquilt in black to complete the stealth look and I have OD green netting for the bug net. Should be a good looking package if a little heavy. BTW, i only sealed the top edge and the stitching on the straps to protect the threads, couldn't see the sense in sealing the grosgrain since it is at the edge anyway. Is that what others do?

I like the way you put the loop attachment reinforcing stitches perpendicular to the direction of stress; excellent way to distribute the pull over a larger area!

KM: I read in another thread that I can't seem to find right now, that some climbers had tested a variety of methods and found that the box and perpendicular were not as strong as stitches along the direction of the load. I've since abandoned the box-X method and do mine straight along the direction of pull. Did you see that thread?

BJM: Looks great. I love the dual stitching along the edging. Did you do that free hand, or does your machine do two needles at once?

    BJM:
Very nice looking tarp you got there. Really like the camo accents as well. I would also keep some extra cordage in the pack in case you need it for guyline extensions, as previously mentioned.

I read that thread too. They determined that bar tacking was the best method to use. This is effectively similar to what you did but employs a very tight zig-zag across the webbing to increase the number of stiches that carry the load. Have a look at the JRB or Arrowhead straps as they are all done with that method.

Wow! Great tarp with some excellent thread-injectoring. I really like the Orbea in the background too.
