    Insultex Weathershield

Decided to finally try an Insultex project (other than boil in bag cozies) so I made a weathershield to hopefully add a little warmth and protection from wind and rain for my JRB down under quilts.

Cut a single layer of IX and 1.1oz ripstop to a size slightly larger than a JRB Nest. Sewed the two pieces of material together using an overcast stitch to make the edges neat and prevent the ripstop from fraying. Rolled the short ends over to create a channel and also sewed grosgrain loops on all four corners. Using a cordlock and some gutted paracord in the channels so the weathershield can be shaped and gaps closed.

Also discovered that it worked fairly well as a lightweight top quilt. Was surprised that I could sleep comfortably with it indoors with a night setback temp of 62F. Snugged one end all the way up to create a sort of footbox. May add some ties a little way in from one end to make it more like a true footbox.

Very interesting. I may want to look into this further....

Very cool idea Knotty..........is it longer than the JRB UQ that you are using? I was thinking of making an extension for my 3/4 length UQ out of IX that would take care of the footbox on my WBBB..........I can see that I may have to get deeper into this!!!!

    Knotty,

As a supplement to other insulation is where I think IX really shines. I put it on top of my down sleeping bag as a TQ and it really adds to the warmth. I can feel it just radiate back. I also use two layers sewn between ripstop for a summer TQ as well as another two for an UQ and I am good down to about 40 degrees.

IX is versatile for sure. Nice to hear of your experience.

Knotty, What you did is already on my list of upcoming projects! I am going to combine this with a Bear Burrito Oven (hammock top cover) to boost winter performance. Doctari has done this and he pointed me to one of his recent videos on You-tube. It looked greata

Sorry for the derail, but this post makes me happy. Santa is bringing a MollyMac hammock sock which I plan to use along with my DD Underblanket in stupid-cold temperatures... that IX bottom should be SWEET!

Thanks everyone. I just weighed it and it comes in at 7.7oz.

It's just a couple inches longer and wider than my full length UQ. If using it with a 3/4 UQ, I'd make it so it only covers the foot area (extension only). If you made it full length, I think there'd be too much of an air gap as it transitions from covering the UQ to the foot area.

First time I've used that stitch. I was looking at sclittlefield's IX with ripstop projects and he brought the ripstop around to the underside of the IX and then used a rolled hem. Very nice but I don't have that kind of sewing talent.

    Knotty:
that was what I was planning to do............just an extension from the foot end of the quilt to the end of the hammock.
