How do you carry it all

Being relatively new to overnight hiking in general and especially hammock camping.... I read about all the over quilts, and under quilts, and insultex and ccf pads, etc. etc. etc... how do you fit all that stuff into your pack? I know down compresses well but it still seems like that is a lot of stuff to stuff into a pack that doesnt sit 3 feet above your head.

Does anybody have pictures of your loaded pack and advice on the best way to fit everything in there? Thanks in advance.

If you have time check out my youtube channel in my signature. Under a series called hiking gear and methodology in the gear reviews section the last 2 parts show how I pack out my gear. I've changed a lot of gear since then but you will get the idea.

    Hope this helps.

Every pack load is a bit different ....
Best to figure out your system ....hammock, UQ, TQ etc.... then work at loading your pack of choice.
    I enjoy that part.

Sorry, I don't have a picture of my pack. In my set up the top and bottom quilts replace the CCF pad. They take up about the same space as a single sleeping bag. The hammock takes up less space than most tents. One of he packs I use is a small daypack and it all fits.
For those that use a pad, some roll it in a cylinder around the inside of the pack and stuff the rest of the gear inside that. Some roll it tight and strap it to the outside of the pack.

Sleeping bag, UQ, hammock and tarp all fit within a 55l rucksack with room to spare for additional clothing. A LOT more packable than my old tent, or the enflating matt I used to use ground camping.

For me, it's not that my sleep systems takes up much room, it's all the other stuff I bring. Assuming you have a large enough pack for the length of trip you are taking, find out what you must bring with you, pack that, then find out how much room is left over for the things you would like to bring. For me it's never about what I can fit in my pack, it's always about the total weight I want to carry. Seems that my pack always fit more than I am willing to carry.

    Good Luck,

    ~S.
