    Kelty Noah 9 or 12

I posted this in another spot but this may be a better place.

I have noticed that most photos of hammocks include a tarp. Is that for weather protection and or dew? I like to see the stars when sleeping out.

Second question. I am thinking about a tarp. The Kelty Noah looks like a good value. Which size would you get?

I have just received a WBBB and have a Green Mountain Double. Most of the use will be warmer weather but maybe a little rain.

    A tarp will:
    Keep rain off
    Block wind
Keep birds from pooping in your hammock

Unless you're in some desert that never sees rain and you don't foresee wind robbing you of heat from all sides, bring a tarp. Actually, bring a tarp any way.

The Noah 9 and 12 are pretty good deals albeit heavy. A Noah 9 is pitched as a diamonf using two stakes and a ridgeline. The ridgline of the Noah 12 tends to be too long in most cases (over 16'), so it is pitched using four stakes (one on each corner) and a ridgeline. I find the coverage of the 9 in a diamond to be more than adequate even in severe weather.

I own a 12 - it is huge and great for winter or two people under it at a time.

In a diamond configuration you need some wide spaced trees to accommodate which will limit your hanging options. Hanging it on the square (front porch style) it is perfect for my WBBB and is great at defeating wind.

I have never tried the 9 but imagine it would be great setup as a diamond.

As I'm sure you know it isn't the lightest tarp but for the money its pretty darn bullet proof and Kelty has excellent return policy if you have an issue (especially if you buy it from REI who has their own amazing service)

I've "bear burrito'd" two hammocks at once in this thing in high wind conditions on a lake in Vermont. Worked great and kept my wife and I nice and warm.

The weight is not a huge deal right now. I was leaning toward the 12 but looking at the pictures the 9 may be large enough. I would like to enclose the hammock if the weather gets bad but it looks like the 9 would give pretty good coverage. It also may be a little easier to handle.

Thanks for the input and any other opinions will be great.

I have both and find the 12 more versatile.

All of the Noahs have tons of tie out. In severe weather, I've found that my 9 can be used as hex shaped tarp by using the two tie out above the lower triangles on the diamond. That will in turn allow you take the lower portion of the diamond and stake it inward toward the hammock making a "triangular wall" on each side. Once you done that, hang your hammock high into the top of the tarp and you'll be dry and only head and tail winds will come in.

I would go out and set mine up that way for a photo, but it raining cats and dogs at the moment here.

I own the 12, and it's more of a hassle to get it taught than the other tarps I own. It does provide a lot of coverage though. If I could do it over again, I would buy the 9. You can't beat the two stake diamond configuration for ease of setup, and it looks to provide plenty of coverage.
    Everybody wang chung tonight!

Agreed on both counts. I have and use the 12 when setting up the "honeymoon suite" but consider it too large for just one hammock.
